Edinburgh has been named the best place to live in the UK.

The Scottish capital topped a 4Homes poll, conducted by Channel 4’s popular property investment programme Location, Location, Location.

“This year’s very best place to live winner is Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city,” said the programme’s presenters Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp.

“It is the flower of Scotland – and the rest of the UK now!”

Prices were cited as a key reason for the city’s victory.

“What makes it even more a winner is that the typical house goes for just £205,000! That’s £5,000 below the UK average,” continued Phil and Kirstie.

The city was followed by Winchester – last year’s number one – with Epsom & Ewell coming in third.

The towns of Waverley and Mole Valley completed the top five.

However, the awards also revealed the worst place to live in the UK.

Middlesbrough scooped the dubious award, moving up six places to claim the top spot this year.

“So what makes it the worst place to live in the UK? For starters health problems are at critical levels, with over a quarter of the inhabitants admitting to regular binge drinking,” commented Phil and Kirstie.

“And there’s the crime; robbery, burglary, sexual assaults, violent crimes and car theft are all more than twice the UK’s average.”

The second world place to live was revealed as Kingston-on-Hull with Newham in third.

Nottingham came fourth, with Merthyr Tydfil – which has among the lowest house prices in the country – making up the top five.

Last year’s number one, Hackney, appears to have made some improvements, falling to 12th on the list of worst places to live.
