Leaked report shows lack of family social housing

The number of family-sized social homes expected to be built in the capital is to fall below the target set by the London Mayor’s office, according to a report today.
According to Inside Housing, leaked documents show that bids from housing associations in north-west London boroughs to the Homes and Community Agency (HCA) amounted to plans to build 8,605 homes, of which 1,824 have three bedrooms or more.
The report said that this represented 21 per cent of new properties to be built under the affordable rent programme, which is fewer than the target of 42 per cent set by the Mayor’s office for new social builds.
The HCA announced earlier this month that it would release land onto the open market to allow the construction of around 3,000 new homes.
This release of public land is in addition to an expected figure of 8,000 homes to be delivered on HCA land over the next four years.
The development and land disposal strategy is part of a wider Government drive to bring more surplus public land forward for new homes, with housing minister Grant Shapps having pledged to release enough land for 100,000 new properties.
No target has been set relating to what proportion of these should be for social housing.
